Pear:

Pear is one of the twenty two ingredients contained in SenSatiaFruit.

Pears are one of the ancient fruits, with a history that pre-dates Christianity by 2,000 years. Some of the earliest writings place pears origin in China, and there are records of pear orchards in Greece in Homer's time. Homer aptly referred to them as a "Gift from the Gods". Pears arrived in the United States with European settlers in the 1700's.

As a fruit, fresh pears have no cholesterol, sodium or saturated fat. They offer a natural, quick source of energy, due to the presence of natural sugars. Pears are nutrient dense- they are high in fiber, a good source of vitamin C and provide the important mineral potassium.

Pears contain about 16 percent carbohydrate and negligible amounts of fat and protein. They are good sources of the B-complex vitamins and also contain vitamin C; in addition, they contain small amounts of phosphorus and iodine.

Research by the United States Department of Agriculture indicates that pears contain phytochemicals, and have a high ORAC rating. A phytochemical is a natural plant substance that works with nutrients and dietary fiber to protect against disease.

Research suggests that phytochemicals, working together and with other nutrients found in fruits, vegetables and nuts may help slow the aging process and reduce the risk of many diseases, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cataracts and urinary tract infections.
